Janitor Charged with Striking a Nursing Home Resident

A man has been charged with striking a disabled resident of a nursing home where he was once employed.

The worker was arrested, Friday, after an investigation led by the Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Control Units Patient Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation (PANE team). The investigation claims the worker, 56, was employed as a janitor at the Edward J. Healy Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.

In January, he allegedly used a metal handled mop to strike a 48-year old mentally disabled patient who lives at the nursing home facility. A nurse also employed by the facility witnessed the incident and he was fired as a result of nursing home abuse.

He is being charged with one count of aggravated battery, a second degree felony and one count of abuse of a disabled adult which is a third degree felony. If he is convicted of the charges, he faces up to 20 years in prison along with a $15,000 fine.
