Parent Sues Mattel After Toy Recall

A parent sued Mattel Inc. and Fisher-Price Inc. about a toy after the companies recalled around 1.5 million toys because of a possibility that the products had excess lead in the surface paint.

The plaintiff, Farrah Shoukry, is seeking a refund for toys and money for diagnostic tests for lead poisoning.

Shoukry, who filed the lawsuit because she purchased the recalled toys for her daughter, wants the suit to become a class action.

The recall included many popular toys such as Dora the Explorer and Sesame Street characters. The toys were recalled on August 1 because Fisher-Price found out that the Chinese company that added detail onto the toys used paint that had an excess amount of lead.

Exposure to lead has been shown to cause brain and kidney damage, especially in children. Lead poisoning symptoms include, among others, nausea, headaches, constipation, seizures, and coma.
